David Adams (Lettings Director) recently presented a new initiative to our board of directors – a podcast discussion. Having been personally impacted by the The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett: E114: How To Fix Your Focus & Stop Procrastinating: Johann Hari on Apple Podcasts, David suggested that the team listened to this podcast and reviewed ahead of their next meeting.
“Having recently read ‘Stolen Focus’ by Johann Hari and having listened to his interview with Steven Bartlett, I was inspired to make changes to regain time and focus”, explains David. “The podcast struck such a nerve with me that I really wanted to share the good practices with the team. I have seen a difference having adopted these changes both in my working day and personal life.
It was a lively discussion with many of us realising just how much we are distracted in our everyday lives when subjected to continual interruptions from technology. The discussion in the boardroom went so well that we decided to share this with all the team and hold a series of ‘mini podcast discussion workshops’.
I sat down with the Lettings team and discussed different ‘marginal gains’ we could adopt to become less distracted. We looked at ways to gain focused, uninterrupted time where deep concentrated work could be done.
It was interesting to share each other’s ‘screentime’ (the amount of time spent using a device with a screen such as a smartphone) and an eye opener to realise that, like many other people, we are spending way too much time looking at our phones. We also discussed possible ideas to help aid sleep performance as well as the idea of implementing a four day week!
We want to prioritise the wellbeing of our team and recognise that these discussions really help.
“Sometimes you have to think of your staff like performance athletes…” Would you want your sports team turning up on match day absolutely knackered, overworked and under slept? Absolutely not! We encourage our team to take their lunch hours, and breaks to go for a little walk, pick up a coffee/bottle of water/ice cream and recharge their batteries. That way they come back to their desk refreshed and ready to perform again. Lettings is a demanding industry where we regularly find ourselves spinning lots of plates. We value our staff very highly so want to do everything we can to allow them to perform at their peak consistently. We also value their personal health and wellness so are making this a regular topic for discussion ongoing.”
